The Secret of Playing 6 Common Guitar Chords

It is important to understand exactly what defines a guitar chord and how one is made, before beginning to play one.

Chords are played on the guitar by creating a melody comprised of sets of tones. These chords are created on A Guitar by strumming or plucking one note at a time across the different strings on the front of the guitar. Chords can use two, three, or even more notes. There are also chords that can be played with one note.

There are two types of chords : major and minor. C, A, G, E and D are the five chords that are considered the foundation of playing the guitar. The first thing to do when learning how to play the guitar is to become proficient with the CAGED chords. If you plan to move on to learn harder chords, learning these basic chords will make the path to becoming an expert a lot smoother.

Using A Diagram

A chord chart or diagram is what will be the most helpful tool when it comes to becoming proficient at chords, so be sure to learn how to read one. If you don’t have these skills it will be difficult to play.

These chord diagrams illustrate exactly how to execute any given chord. Reading the chords in the diagram correctly and being able to play them with accuracy are two of the most important factors in becoming a successful guitarist.

You should follow the ‘C A G E D’ pattern.

Picture yourself observing a guitar. Think about what the frets look like. There are six strings attached to a fret board, and that is what it is made up of. The stings lay over the top of the fret board. With these strings, you’ll be creating melody and chords. You should think about every fret and memorize the chords that go with them, in order to master fingering. Playing more difficult chords will be much easier once you have mastered the five easier, basic chords.

Having Trouble?

What many people don’t realize is that when you start out on the guitar, you will end up with fingers that are quite sore. If your fingers don’t feel just a little bit of pain afterwords, you’re not playing correctly. The strings must be pressed upon with force in order to finger the strings correctly. Press a bit harder on the strings if the echo doesn’t sound right or if you hear a buzzing sound while you’re playing.

Some Tips

1) Don’t try to play with long fingernails. Long fingernails can interfere with being able to press the strings, and this will just make things more difficult when you are first learning.

2. Keep your fingers arched as you play. Flat fingers will cause important strings to become muted. Many people that are new to the guitar make this error.

3. Be certain that you use only your fingertips to press down the strings, and not the entire surface of your finger. Keep your fingers firmly arched. This tends to hurt quite a bit and take a lot of effort, but soon you will have calluses that will protect you from pain.

4.  All of the notes should be pressed at the same time. Don’t forget any of the strings or the sound won’t be correct.

5.  Spend time practicing. Take the time to memorize each pattern of chords.

6) Be patient with yourself. You’ll only become frustrated if you try to rush things. Initially, find songs that are simply to play.
