how to play a song on a guitar

I can not emphasize enough the importance of learning songs on guitar, really great news is that the songs do not have to be difficult to remember that play in most cases they are playing people who do not play guitar and have no idea whether a song is difficult to play or not!

Nothing drove this point home to one of my students in an incident that happened to him years ago. We will call the student Trevor (not his real name) to protect the guilty.

Trevor had taken lessons from me for a couple of years now and he feels very proud of their musical accomplishments: he could move his fingers quickly across the pitch, most common scales could play in a variety of keys and Trevor was proud of all the licks and tricks that he knew the guitar.

About this time (1987), a guitarist by the name of Joe Satriani burst onto the scene with his landmark album "Surfing With The Alien" Trevor thought was ready for the challenge especially since he had agreed to play at the birthday party of a friend in eight weeks and figured that would be perfect

venue for showing his ability to play the guitar began to work on the hardest song of Satriani.

From past experience I knew that although a song may be very impressive for a guitarist's perspective the problems are:

(A) usually there are not many of them at the hearing

(B) in general, guitarists in the audience who are most likely entered the kitchen and had not paid for that

(C) if a song is too complex as the general public usually do not respond favorably to it.

During one of the lessons from Trevor not-so-subtly mentioned that he must have a 'plan B' song in the manga … "Just in case", he resisted, I insisted and finally succumbed and reluctantly learned How To Play Guitar all the time popular instrumental "Guitar Boogie".

Here is just in case you need a 'Plan B' at some point (we all do!)

Benefits of learning this song:

12 Bar Blues chord progression to rhythm guitar

voiceless – instrumental song with 100% focus on guitar

Alternate picking – great pick Practice

Major pentatonic scale – melody is based on the pentatonic scale

and most importantly …

the public love this song!

Some songs just "click" with the public and this is certainly one of them!

How did Trevor go to the party?

When Trevor made Masterpiece guitar hardly anyone noticed, in fact one of the guests asked him later, when I would be playing his guitar piece really cold, red-faced exhausted and amazed he remembered my advice and played guitar Boogie to a captive audience and applause, the old 'plan B'
