What To Look For In An Acoustic Guitar
For the beginner musician there are several ways to go, instrument wise. Although the piano is fairly popular, the obvious choice is an acoustic guitar. It’s a staple for any songwriter and it is incredibly dynamic, allowing you to play anything from soft ballads to upbeat funk. Plus, it’s quite mobile, unlike the piano, and allows you to practice anywhere you’d like.
Any local music shop will have an array of acoustics waiting for you to try out. The prices vary quite a bit as do the quality of the instruments. While some acoustics may cost only 50 dollars, they are not nearly as easy to play as one a few hundred dollars more. Of course, difficulty playing is very frustrating when first learning the instrument.
There aren’t just differences in price and quality, but there are also several types of acoustics to choose from. The standard choice is usually the dreadnought acoustic guitar. Although models like the twelve string and classical Guitars are popular, they are specific to certain genres. The dreadnought is more versatile.
When price is your biggest concern then try an Alvarez acoustic guitar. These are very inexpensive, in the $100-200 range, but they are still quite playable. First time players will save on money without sacrificing too much in quality.
Another popular brand that you’re bound to find in most music shops is the Takamine acoustic guitar. This is reasonably priced at around $200-300, but the quality makes it an even better deal. These guitars also tend to last a long time.
If you’ve decided that you don’t want to make any sacrifices then an ideal choice is the Martin acoustic. Even though the cheapest Martin will still run you around $500, there is no comparison in quality. Each instrument is crafted by hand in the US and with an acute attention to detail, the fretboard is a dream to play. Any beginner would feel comfortable strumming one of these.
Another high end brand to consider are Taylor guitars. These offer similar quality and price to the Martins. One specific model that works great for beginners is the ‘Baby Taylor.’ This guitar is 3/4 sized but is just as easy to play as a normal acoustic. With its size, it’s perfect to take with you wherever you go.
So, if you’ve decided that acoustic guitars are what you want to learn music on, then consider a dreadnought. Companies such as Alvarez, Takamine, Martin and Taylor offer reasonably priced, quality acoustics. With all these choices, there is bound to be one that fits your needs.
